Friday marked exactly 90 days until 100 miles.

On August 17, I’m running the Vermont 100 on 100, a 6-person relay starting at the von Trapp Family Lodge (yup, think: The Sound of Music) near Stowe.  We’ll run on dirt roads next to cows, through small, sleepy towns, past the Ben & Jerry’s factory, and on trails through the forest and over mountains, all the way down to Okemo.  Total distance per runner is 15-19 miles and we’ll be on the move for 10-12 hours, with the rest of us following after the current runner in the “50 Shades of Crazy” (team name) minivan.

Here’s the course (it has some MAJOR hills, especially toward the end):

The rest of the team lives in Vermont, and, so, I’ll be representing NYC (wearing my Yanks hat, of course).  For the next three months, you’ll find me sprinting hills in Central Park and maxing out my FaceTime for *very important* prep meetings.

Two things (not including optimism and team spirit) that will get me to the start line (and you should know about, too):

runkeeper 2

A great fitness app: records time, distance, pace and calories burned (tailored to gender, age and current weight), and, talks to you every five minutes during your workout, for updates about distance covered and average pace.  If you need a pat on the back, you can also upload results right after the run is complete to your social media.

Newton Running: Gravity
Trying something new (vs. my usual New Balance 1400) with Gravity by Newton, which are meant to deliver a more natural running position.  Super cushy (that’s their “Action/Reaction Technology,” which hardcore fans of the brand swear by) and they look pretty sweet, too.  Gravity is a mix between a daily training sneaker and a faster tempo-pace run/race shoe.  See you in Central Park!
