Meet my mom.  She’s the smartest lady around.  The matriarch of our family with a capital “M.”  My best friend.  This is pretty much how I still feel about her.

For my 28th birthday, we flew to Miraval (miravalresorts.com) in the Santa Catalina, AZ mountains for a long weekend to celebrate.

It didn’t take much to convince me that it’s the happiest place on earth:
Sunrise desert walks. Sea salt scrubs. Homemade granola with fresh berries.
horse
I even succeeded in getting her onto a horse for the first time in 45 years!
(Notice my “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Blahniks” t-shirt by C. Ronson, from a life-long friend at TEEN VOGUE – we bonded over late-night DIY projects at the office and during cross-country flights for back-to-school events – I wore this tee, literally, to shreds.)

On our third day there, I took my very first spin class with an instructor named Randy.  Toned, taught and TAN.  When things got tough mid-way through, he told me to shut my eyes and see myself riding through a long, dark brick tunnel pedaling closer and closer to a bright, white light.

I still use Randy’s technique each and every time I get on the bike–to quiet my mind, control my breath, silence “I can’t do it” thoughts and focus on every second of the ride.

My mom has always begged me to write a book.  I guess this is my answer–for now.
So, here’s to looking forward–breath slow and steady, eyes focused on the light.
